Ultimate Beer Batter Onion Rings Recipe

Yep, the rumors are true. For now on, you don’t need to go to a restaurant to order onion rings! You can make them at home.

All you need is a little time  and some friends to share them with.  These beer battered onion rings are light, crispy and highly addictive. They taste great, go perfectly with  ketchup and some more beer.

They are great  side dish but also are great as a stand-alone snack. And it can be even better.  I’m a big fan of crisp, fried foods, chicken, shrimp, potato… you name it.

But if you want to cut some calories you can bake these rings in a oven and they will have same crunchiness and texture as deep fried. Either way, you’re gonna love them.

Ingredients
  1. 2 large onions, sliced 1/4-to-1/2-inch thick
  2. 2 cups buttermilk
  3. ¾ cup flour plus 5 tbsp for coating
  4. ¾ cup beer
  5. 1 tsp garlic powder
  6. 1 tsp chili powder
  7. 1 tsp salt
  8. 5 tbsp bread crumbs
  9. olive oil spay or 1 to 2 quarts frying oil, such as canola or peanut
Instructions
  1. eparate the sliced onions into rings .Place the onion rings into a large dish and soak in buttermilk for 3 hours. In a small bowl mix ¾ cup flour, ¾ cup beer , garlic powder, chili powder and salt. Remove onion rings from buttermilk, shake off excess, dredge in flour, shake off excess, dip in beer batter, drain well the excess batter and then dredge in the bread crumbs. In a large pot add the oil. It should be at least 3 inches deep. Heat the oil to at least 360°F . Place the rings into the hot oil and fry for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown. Work in batches , do not overcrowd the pot. Place finished onion rings on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb the excess oil.
  2. If you want oven baked onion rings,preheat the oven to 450° F. Arrange the rings on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer and spray with some oil. Place the baking sheet into your preheated oven , on the middle rack and bake for 20 minutes or until crisp and golden brown.
  3. Serve with your favorite sauce.
