It’s Wednesday! Which means it’s Would You Rather time. Today, a battle of veggies you often see in salads (I know tomatoes are technically a fruit, but whateves, they usually function in food as a vegetable).

Option #1: You can never eat tomatoes again.

Option #2: You can never eat lettuce again.

Things to consider: Burgers & sandwiches – this kind of applies equally to both lettuce and tomato, but whichever you choose you can’t expect to garnish your burger or salad with either tomatoes or lettuce anymore. Salads. Sure, if you eliminate tomatoes you can’t have them on a salad anymore, but without lettuce you’re pretty much eliminating all salad, ever. Tomato sauce, tomato juice. No more bloody mary’s, but more importantly, with no tomato sauce you won’t be eating much pizza, lasagna or pasta again unless you find an alternative sauce.

Which do you choose and why?

Too easy! I will just east some cellophane wrappers to make up for the missing lettuce in my diet.

Instead of lettuce you could use arugula or spinach. Or even kale. I mean, c’mon. Tomatoes are in a ton of delicious things like marinara sauce, on pizza, in soup (paste), and so on. Lettuce is replaceable and cabbage has more flavor anyway.

So celery leaves can’t count as lettuce…but they’re great on sandwiches…I’m sorry…if you say they count as lettuce…you’re crazy. Plus you can make a salad without lettuce. Not that I wouldn’t miss it, but it’s more doable…no ketchup? no way.

I must abstain then. I hate raw tomato. HATE raw tomato. It would be so easy to give up the tomato on a burger (aka death slices of slime that ruin perfectly good beef). But I could never give up ketchup, or red sauce. I could also never give up lettuce, spinich, kale, or collards. I love my leafy greens!

I’m weighing in with the minority on this one. I know it would be a huge pain to try and get around tomato sauce – severely limiting for pizza and Italian food. But I can’t imagine never eating salads again. They’re just too important to me in the grand scheme of eating healthy.

Also, I could easily do without tomatoes on sandwiches and burgers, but definitely would still want lettuce on them.

The first very hard decision for me. I enjoy eating both. Since I can’t go a week without a good batch of tomato sauce, I’d go with tomatoes (and smuggle in lettuce from somewhere).
