That’s the cumulative total of free rice that will have been raised by the end of today, thanks to the website FreeRice. The site launched in October, is run by 49 year-old computer programmer John Breen, and is the sister site of poverty.com. They have a word game on the site, and for each word you get right, they will donate 20 grains of rice to help end world hunger.

Yesterday they had enough people play to donate more than 386 MILLION grains of rice, bringing them to more than 9.8 billion grains so far. So how do they afford this? The site claims banner ads that appear at the bottom of the screen help cover the cost. The more people visit the site, the more the advertisers pay, and the more rice they can pay for. Check it out if you so desire.
