One of the biggest food related news stories this week has to be out of Norway, after a truck trailer full of goat cheese caught fire near the town of Narvik, blocking a tunnel, which then took firefighters four days to put it out, as mass quantities of scalding,  fondue worthy goodness spilled out onto the road.

Many a trucker has lost his precious cargo to an unsuspecting Interstate freeway or winding mountain road. It’s just a tad more interesting when the goods being transported are delicious.

Oregon’s I-84 gets Smuckered earlier this year, after a tractor trailer over turned, spilling mass quantities of raspberry puree.

July  2008, 5,000 gallons of molasses leaked from an overturned tanker truck onto the highway in Sugar Land, Texas. Yes, Sugar Land. Fate is sometimes both cruel and hilarious.

April  2008, a tractor-trailer overturned on I-95 in St. John’s County, Florida, spilling load of  Jell-O Snack Packs. Bill Cosby was inconsolable upon hearing the news but quickly regained composure after confirming no pudding pops were harmed.

February 2010, in Modesto, CA, a truck carrying tomato paste lost its load.  Up to six inches of tomato paste covered the road.

June 2009, a truck loaded with doughnut glaze lost control and rolled over on the Pacific Highway South in Des Moines, Washington. Conservation Officers have been dealing with diabetic frogs ever since.

February 2009, in Salt Lake City, Utah, truck driver fell asleep at the wheel, drifted into the center divider, causing the semi to strike an overhead, spilling about 40,000 pounds of hamburger patties on the highway. A few hours earlier, a truck spilled beer on a nearby highway.

May 2008, a tractor-trailer loaded with Keystone Light beer overturned near Denver, CO , spilling cases of beer on I-70 and closing the ramp for several hours.

August 2006, a trailer full of garlic overturned along Highway 299 in Montgomery Creek, CA. The town Council soon voted in favor of purposely wrecking a Mentos truck in the same area.

BEST TAILGATE PARTY EVER

October 2011,  a truck carrying frozen baked goods and bratwurst was involved in an accident, causing its cargo to spill all over I-74, resulting in20 tons of food, including chocolate cake, doughnuts and cinnamon rolls, strewn all over the highway.

December 2011, 40,000 pounds of ice cream spilled from a semitrailer in Indiana, closing two lanes of an interstate highway. The truck unsuccessfully navigated an off ramp, tipped, spilling cartons of vanilla, caramel praline crunch, and other flavors of Edy’s ice cream.

Oregon, June 2009: 2,000 cases of expired snack cakes to the landfill after a Little Debbie truck overturned on Oregon 217. Twinkie the Kid, unavailable for comment, was asked to provide an alibi.

June 2012 A shipment of Hungry Jack maple syrup spilled onto two lanes of Interstate 71/75 after a semi-trailer hit a median near Buttermilk Pike. Yes. Buttermilk Pike. I think it’s just north of Waffle Plains.
