Hand Tossed pizza-hut

Drum roll please? Really? The new hand-tossed pizza from Pizza Hut is so unbelievably amazing that it needs it’s own back-up drummer? I feel the marketing scheme went a little too far on this one. Although the crust was garlic-y and well-seasoned, the pizza as a whole fell flat.

When I get a pizza with such exciting marketing on the box, I expect to be wowed. My first piece was floppy and greasy. I think the holes they put in the pizza just allow the cheese grease to seep through to the dough making it gooey instead of toasted. I thought that the amount of dough on the pizza was consistent with typical hand-tossed pizza but there was nothing special about it. If you’re going to make a new pizza, why not make it shine?

The cheese and sauce was still as delicious as always and in the right proportions. I wasn’t satisfied though, until I got to the crust. The crust was crunchy, seasoned with Italian spices, and garlic-buttery. It was like an upgraded breadstick. If the entire pizza dough could have tasted like the crust, it would have been a much better pizza.

I remembered that the commercial stressed the garlic butter brushed crust so maybe that swayed my opinion. However, I think that a pizza should be overall delicious and more than just the one-inch by four-inch crust section. Pizza Hut’s stuffed crust is more than just crust. Although they stress the pumped up crust, the rest of the piece of pizza is equally delicious.

If I think about the hand-tossed pizzas I’ve had in the past, I’d say that their crust and overall presentation was much better than Pizza Hut’s. That’s what they’re selling that’s new, right? I mean it’s the same sauce recipe, the same cheese blend, the same dough but the way it’s prepared is supposed to be new. I guess they were going for “hand-tossed” meaning it wasn’t baked in a pan like a pan pizza and didn’t have cheese in the crust like stuffed crust and wasn’t like a cracker like flatbread pizza.

For me, the hand-tossed pizza from Pizza Hut was a flop. I feel that they could have done much more with their resources than create that. I mean, they came up with stuffed crust! One of my favorite binge junk foods. It seems to me that they were merely looking for something “different” than their competitors rather than thinking about what the customer really wants.

When I order a hand-tossed pizza, I expect it to look more, you know, hand-tossed. Like it has bubble or some sort of defect. This looked like a cookie-cutter pizza I could have bought at a local super market. Although I will continue ordering stuffed crust and triple stuffed crust pizza from Pizza Hut, I don’t think I’ll be ordering the new hand-tossed pizza again. Unless I decide to eat only the crust. Bonus though, because I am a Hut Lovers member, I scored free cheese sticks with my order. Not too bad.
