Ah March, that time of year when people put anything and everything into “bracket” form. Last year, So Good brought down the house with our wildly popular Meat Madness tournament. One full month of debates, arguments and voting, leading to some interesting final results, and ultimately, bacon defeating steak to be crowned the greatest meat in the land.  We even had some controversy along the way, as Deadspin accused an ESPN reporter of copying the idea of a meat bracket.

Rather than re-hash Meat Madness, this year So Good has returned with an all new competition: The Fast Food Bracket.

The rules are fairly simple. Over the course of the next month, So Good readers will vote, match-up by match-up, to determine what is the best fast food chain in America.  When we use the term “fast food”, we are using it loosely. These tournament competitors really fall under the larger umbrella of Quick Service Restaurants, or QSR.

Please weigh in with your predictions, intriguing match-ups and thoughts in the comments!

Here is how the participants and seeding were determined, working off last year’s list of the top 50 QSR chains:

  • You must have a substantial portion of your sales come from food, specifically non-dessert foods (sorry Starbucks, Jamba Juice and Cold Stone, that means you’re out…Dairy Queen, Dunkin Donut’s, you guys have a big enough variety of food offerings, so you’re in)
  • Only 32 chains are eligible. Sure, I could have done 64, but just like with Meat Madness, that would have taken forever to vote on. 32 it is. Complain in the comments about your favorite “bubble chain” that got bounced, but you’re just gonna have to deal with it.
  • The top 16 chains by revenue get automatic berths, with the top 4 holding #1 seeds, next 4 holding #2 seeds, etc. Doesn’t matter how bad people think your food sucks, just like the big conferences get an edge in basketball, so do these guys.
  • I combined Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. even though they are listed separately on the QSR 50 list, because they are jointly own/run. However, this did not move their seed up – tough noogies.
  • After that, the seeding was at my discretion, but for the most part I stuck to the basic structure of ranking them based on revenue.
  • The only chains outside of the top 32 in revenue that made the cut as “wild-cards” based on reputation and pop culture familiarity were: In n Out, White Castle and Five Guys.

Voting begins when the “real” tournament starts on Thursday, with voting on two match-ups at a time during the first round. Make sure to check back to So Good at approximately noon each day so you can vote on each of the match-ups.

Last year I heard stories from all across the country of people printing out Meat Madness brackets in their office, running an office pool or making their predictions. Glad everyone enjoyed it so much, and hope they enjoy this competition as well.

Just like with Meat Madness, voting criteria is totally up to you. Want to vote just based on which you think is the best tasting and nothing else? Go for it. Maybe you want to factor in cost? Convenience? Quality of service? Number of locations? Variety of menu options?

The choice is yours.  But one thing is clear: in one month’s time, So Good will be crowning one lucky chain as the “Top Fast Food Chain” in America.

I’m talking, of course, about Meat Madness.  When we began, we had 32 humble meats and a bevy of interesting first round match-ups.  We even had some copycats and controversy along the way. When we concluded, we were left with just one meat champion, Bacon, powered to victory in no small part by the strong support of a legion of pro-Bacon bloggers.

For those of you in Meat Madness office pools or just following along at home, I’d like to provide you with a bracket showing the final results of this heated 6-week battle.  Click on the bracket below to see a full size version of it. This final bracket includes not only the winners in each match-up, but the final percentage breakdown in votes for each and every match-up.  Enjoy!

After watching 32 meats face-off for meat supremacy over the past 6 weeks, we are down to our final vote. Steak vs. Bacon. The winner will be crowned as the single greatest meat there is.

First Match-Up: Chicken vs. Bacon

Polls for this match-up will open at Noon on Tuesday and remain open until Noon on Thursday.

Chicken – Winner of the Poulty Region, #1 seed.

Many assumed that Chicken’s early dominance was due to weak early match-ups against Quail and Rabbit. But Chicken made a huge statement in the Elite 8, absolutely destroying Thanksgiving and sandwich favorite Turkey 71% – 29%.  So what is Chicken’s key to success? Affordability, accessibility and versatility perhaps? Fried chicken and chicken wings are favorites of eaters everywhere, and there are just so many delicious ways you can cook or prepare Chicken.

Bacon – Winner of the Pork Region, #1 seed.

Bacon. You know it, you love it, and you know the internet/foodie obsession with it.  I thought Sausage was the only meat with a chance of stopping Bacon in this region, and after Sausage was upset by Ribs in the first round, Bacon’s Pork Region title may have been inevitable.  Bacon had no trouble brushing off Ribs in the Elite 8, 69% – 31%.  Will Chicken be the meat that finally gives it a challenge?

Second Match-Up: Steak vs. Crab

Polls for this match-up will open at Noon on Thursday and remain open until Noon on Saturday.

Steak – Winner of the Red Meat Region, #1 seed.

Steak has easily crushed all competitors so far to date, most recently beating #2 seed Lamb with a more than convincing 77% – 23% victory.  Ground Beef, with its versatility, might have been the only hope to prevent Steak from winning this region, but after Ground Beeffell to Lamb, Steak has steamrolled its way into the Final Four.

Crab – Winner of the Seafood Region, #6 seed.

You just can’t hold a good Crab down. With perhaps the toughest road to the Final Four, Crab knocked off seafood heavyweights like Salmon and Scallops in close, but never tight votes, before pulling out a 5 vote victory over Lobster in the Elite 8 to claim the crown as best Seafood.

Join us all week in voting for, and arguing which of these four meats deserves the crown.  The final match-up to determine the Meat Madness winner will take place next week.

Wow. We had quite the down to the wire vote on that last match-up!  After blowouts by Steak and Chicken, Lobster and Crab fought it out to the bitter end with Crab upsetting Lobster by only 5 votes!

Today’s battle will determine the winner of the Pork Region. #1 seed Bacon takes on Cinderella story #7 Ribs.

Voting will be open until noon tomorrow. Remember, this is the LAST match-up of the Elite 8. Here is a preview of next week’s match-ups:

Monday: Red Meat Region #1 Steak vs. #2 Lamb

#1 Steak wasted no time establishing its dominance, crushing Roast Beef with 88% of the vote in the first round and defeating Buffalo with 86% of the vote in the second round.  Steak is clearly a force to be reckoned with in this tournament, but so far has not faced any serious competition. Has it been overhyped after facing two relatively weak early opponents or will it steamroll any future competitors as well?

#2 Lamb faced a much more difficult path to the Elite 8.  In the first round, Corned Beef gave it little trouble, with Lamb taking a convincing 67% of the vote. However, in the second round, Lamb faced an exhausting battle with #3 seed Ground Beef, tying 50%-50% after 24 hours of voting. In a 24 hour long overtime vote, Lamb finally prevailed over Ground Beef by a mere TWO votes. Has Lamb been battle tested with their victory over Ground Beef? Or will it be too fatigued to put up a fight against Steak?

Tuesday: Poultry Region #1 Chicken vs. #2 Turkey

#1 Chicken has had perhaps the easiest waltz into the Elite 8 of any of the remaining competitors.  After crushing Pheasant with 89% of the vote, Chicken easily dispensed of Rabbit with an even more impressive 91% of the vote.  Chicken is popular and omnipresent, but when people think Chicken, will they envision dry, tasteless chicken, yummy fried chicken or spicy buffalo wings?  Does it have the taste chops or foodie credentials to take on a more formative competitor?

#2 Turkey breezed past Quail in the first round with 83% of the vote.   However, Turkey ran into ferocious opposition from impassioned supporters of #3 Duck in the second round, ultimately prevailing with 57% of the vote.  Will Duck supporters fall in line behind the bird that vanquished their favorite? Will nostalgia for Thanksgiving and love of sandwiches power Turkey to victory? Will complaints that it is “dry” and “boring” be heard? Will this battle-tested meat be able to knock off the Poultry region’s #1 seed?

Wednesday: Seafood Region #1 Lobster vs. #6 Crab

#1 Lobster cruised past #8 Clams based on taste, prestige and its reputation as a delicacy, winning with 84% of the vote.  However, Lobster ran into a strong opponent in the second round, with #5 Shrimp capturing a healthy 42% of the vote. Lobster remains a strong competitor that can succeed on taste and prestige alone. But will concerns about its cost and availability ultimately sink this shellfish?

#6 Crab faced a tough first round match-up but proved they were underrated by the selection committee after defeating Salmon with 58% of the vote.  In the second round, Crab continued to assert its dominance by defeating foodie and Top Chef favorite Scallops with 61% of the vote.  It comes down to this: Crab feels slighted by their #6 seed and is out to prove its critics wrong.  Will concerns about how difficult it is to eat Crab cause it any problems? Will the taste and eating ritual associated with Crab power it to victory? Can this shellfish normally associated with Alaska and the Mid-Atlantic defeat Northeast darling Lobster?

Thursday: Pork Region #1 Bacon vs. #7 Ribs

#1 Bacon, long the favorite of internet foodies, wasted no time in laughing off its early competitors, taking 91% of the vote against Pork Chops, the highest vote percentage of any #1 seed in the first round.  BBQ lovers thought Pulled Pork might give Bacon a fight in the second round, but Bacon tossed aside its competition, winning a stunning 78% of the vote.

#7 Ribs has been the Cinderella story of the entire Meat Madness tournament.  Despite pleas from Sausage supporters that Ribs lacked versatility and consistency, BBQ lovers rushed to the defense of their favorite meat.   Sausage lovers, believing their meat had the chops to go all the way to the Final Four, were stunned when Ribs defeated Sausage with 58% of the vote in the first round.   Proving their victory was no fluke, Ribs expanded their margin in the second round, taking out foodie favorite Prosciutto with 69% of the vote.  Bacon represents probably the strongest foe possible, but throughout the competition Ribs supporters have been out in full force. Can their Cinderella run continue?

Update: Voting on these match-ups is now closed.  The Bacon juggernaut rolls on, crushing Pulled Pork 79% – 21%.  Ribs also continued it’s dominate march, destroying Prosciutto 69% – 31%.

Today marks the final match-ups of round 2 voting. After today’s vote we will be down to our Elite 8 meats.  Because this is the final vote of this round, and I’m getting the poll up a little late, voting on these match-ups will close tomorrow at 3 pm.

Today’s vote pits #1 seed Bacon vs. #5 seed Pulled Pork.  In the first round Bacon sizzled to victory with 90% of the vote against Pork Chops.  Pulled Pork beat up on Ham, 68% – 32%.

Today’s vote also sees #3 seed Prosciutto take on #7 seed Ribs. In the first round Prosciutto edged out Pepperoni 57% – 43%.  In a stunning first round upset Ribs defeated Sausage 58% – 42%.

After a razor tight Lamb vs. Ground Beef overtime match-up that was decided by a mere two votes, it’s time to move on to a new region – the Seafood region. Today, #1 seed Lobster takes on #5 seed Shrimp, and #6 seed Crab takes on #2 seed Scallops.

Update: Voting on this match-up is now closed.  Chicken defeats Rabbit 91% – 9%. Turkey defeats Duck 57% – 43%.

Now that we are in the second round and the weaker seeds have been weeded out, we should have some tough, tough battles ahead.

Here’s what we have to look forward to Wednesday and Thursday: Lobster vs. Shrimp, Crabs vs. Scallops, Bacon vs. Pulled Pork and Proscuitto vs. Ribs. DAMN. Those are some heavy hitters of the meat world.  Every single one of those match-ups should be great.

Today we return to the Poultry region where #1 seed Chicken faces off against #4 seed Rabbit (yes, I know Rabbit is not a bird, we went through this already) and #2 Turkey takes on #3 Duck.

In the first round, Chicken got egg on the face of Pheasant, winning with a solid 89% of the vote, while Rabbit hopped away with 62% of the vote against Ostrich.   Turkey gobbled up 83% of the vote vs. Quail, while Duck waddled it’s way to 71% of the vote against Cornish Hen.
