I’d sworn off McDonald’s baked pies for some time now. Admittedly, I was bitter after experiencing the taste bud Armageddon that was their heinously artificial tasting chocolate banana pie debacle. The fact it replaced the thoroughly life changing, albeit short lived peach pie offering was a gloved slap in the face and with that, Ronald’s pastries were dead to me.

Much to my fast food geek delight, I gazed up at the drive thru order board heavens one morning, to be greeted by a deluge of signage heralding the birth of the new Oreos Cookies ‘N’ Cream baked pie. Joy! My giddy excitement turns to nervous apprehension. Would it surpass their S’mores pie from last year and its sweet-tooth imploding sugar overkill?

Only the snack food Gods & my window jockey Dwayne could provide me with the answer.

Since most fast food joints don’t seem to have an issues with serving dessert for breakfast now, as my many a soft serve cone Brunch can attest, obtaining a duo of piping hot pies was a snap.

The Pie crust is mercifully tame in sweetness, much like its cookie world counterpart. I award the most points to the crust, which thankfully possesses some crunchy give to it, again texturally evoking a Oreo cookie wafer. The filling, marshmallow in flavor still hints a slight nod to the Oreo frosting middle but in a smooth, flowing form. Its sweetness, a perfect foil to the exterior pie shell.

The Oreo Cookie’s ‘n’ Cream Pie begs to be partnered with a cold glass of milk. That’s right. You will contemplate buying milk at a McDonald’s. Your mind = blown.

The only negative thing to say is that I was slightly bummed by the tiny size of the pie. It’s certainly smaller in stature than its many predecessors. Of course my resentful disappointment could be directly related to how delicious these tasty treats turned out to be.

Also, be forewarned, you’ll never be able to go back to Oreo Cakesters after this.

It’s the 100th Birthday of the Oreo this year, and this value menu item (I scored 2 for $1.39 at my local Mickey D’s) is a nice roll out as part of the celebration. Here’s hoping it finds a permanent place on the roster.

As I suspected this is a test market item, which may even be only in Canada as I write this. Have there been any more sightings out there to report? Keep So Good Nation in the loop!

I love minty treats. I’ve been known to pocket more than my fair share of hard peppermint candies when leaving a restaurant. I also eat approximately seven thousand candy canes every December. I can’t get enough of that cool, refreshing mint-ness! Also cool and refreshing: Dairy Queen Blizzards. Since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, the Blizzard has been one of my favorite ice cream creations.

With that being said, I have somehow never had the Candy Cane Chill Blizzard. It is described as “Peppermint candy pieces and choco chunks blended with creamy vanilla soft serve.” Fans of this frozen delight were up in arms a year ago when it was not brought back for the winter. This year, though, they can rest easy, because the Blizzard of the month for December is: you guessed it, Candy Cane Chill.

I made my way to the local DQ to do a taste test, although I was surely going to love this thing. I chose the Mini size, because I think it’s a perfect little serving. The prices are as follows: Mini – $2.59, Small – $3.09, Medium – $3.49, Large – $3.99. Mini is definitely the worst value, but when it’s below 40 degrees I’m not usually looking to load up on ice cream. Brace-face at the drive-thru window said it was his favorite Blizzard, for what it’s worth.

My first order of business once I was handed my minty masterpiece was to tip it upside down. I’m not sure what it says about the Blizzard that you can do this without making a mess, but I do it every time, because I can.

If I had to use one word to describe the Candy Cane Chill Blizzard, it would have to be a weird word, like scrumdiddlyumptious, because I like weird words. But really, ‘mmmmmm’ would be a more fitting description.

If you’ve ever had the peppermint ice cream with the little red candy bits in it, that’s basically what this is, plus chocolate. This Blizzard is not overly minty, if you’re worried about such things. In fact I thought it could use some extra peppermint flavor. The candy bits were more like candy granules, but I guess that’s a good thing; a candy cane shard Blizzard would be somewhat dangerous. Of course, the chocolate pieces were good too, adding an extra flavor element. The best part was the crunchiness; I can’t explain it, but there’s something I love about crunchy ice cream.

So I guess what I’m saying is, go get one of these NOW, and love it. Last one to DQ’s a rotten egg!

As if things haven’t been going poorly enough for Rupert Murdoch recently, while he was testifying before a British Parliament committee on the phone hacking scandal, he was hit by a shaving cream pie from some wacko.

Outside of his wife doing the old jump-slap on the perpetrator (and leading to the fantastic CNN quote “nothing comes between the slap-down sister and her mister”), I was left wondering – is it really asking too much to see someone use an actual pie?

Seriously, is it really that much harder to sneak in a shaving cream pie over a key lime pie? And shaving cream washes right off – but blueberry juice – forget your stain stick – that stuff is permanent. Want to leave an impression, hit someone with a coconut cream pie – you get the same “creamed” effect, but it is also delicious.

And maybe it’s me, but I expected more out of Jolly Olde England. Perhaps a Shepard’s Pie should have been in order…

Shaving cream? Please. Unimaginative, and just plain lazy. I expect more out of my lunatics.

Yes, this appears to be real. Fresh off its Snack Madness victory, reports have been spreading that Oreo is prepping for a national launch of the Triple Double Oreo. While some may be stunned that Oreo would make such a creation, AdFreak points out, “most of us have been making the exact same thing by hand since we were 7 years old.” Although based on the picture, this doesn’t appear to be a regular Oreo with triple the creme, but rather a double-decker, “Big Mac style” Oreo.

What do you think So Good readers? Do you want to try it?

They also share a more detailed photo, which clearly shows the product contains BOTH vanilla and chocolate creme filling.

It’s Thursday again, which means it’s time for another Eating Styles post! This week, you must pause, look deep within, and ask yourself…how do I eat my cupcakes?

Now I know that pie is the new cupcake, and people are getting sick of cupcakes, and Eick hates cupcakes. But even though cupcakes are the “overplayed” food equivalent of Green Day’s “Good Riddance,” there’s something nostalgic and timeless about them, and Eating Styles could not call itself a truly comprehensive weekly food poll if we didn’t at least give them a head nod. Plus, they’re just so darn cute!

It’s a tough question, but one we all have to face at one point in our lives: to eat the frosting first, or to not eat the frosting first?

Eating the frosting first brings one back to Kindergarten birthday parties (okay, maybe eleventh grade ones, too…last year…whatever). Your mom would bring in those cute cuppin’ cakes all arranged nicely on a decorative plate and a veritable sugar carnage ensued, with ten little hungry maws all chomping straight down on ten pillowy mounds of pink frosting all at once. This eating style is a visual manifestation of the id, a submission to the desires of a moment, a flash instinct of survival.

Eating the frosting last, on the other hand, requires more care and talent. Not only do you have to resist that pile of creamy sugar, you have to hollow out a cake cave underneath it first. If you’re holding your cupcake, this has to be done with an awkward tilting of the head. Teasing the cake out with a fork always brings that perilous midpoint where the whole thing tips over and you’re suddenly at risk of frosting-on-plate smearage. If this method succeeds, however, the rewards are fluffy, sweet, and mind-blowingly delicious.

For the more temperate eater, there’s always the eat-as-you go option. I salute you guys for your ability and self control – it takes a bit of skill to get that perfect frosting-to-cake ratio.

Finally, there’s the option to not eat the frosting at all. Believe it or not, there are folks out there who find frosting too rich, or too sweet, or choose not to indulge for health reasons.

Which are you, So Good readers? The carnal frosting annihilator who inhales that mound of velvety goodness as soon as possible? The adventurous cake-hollower who believes good things come to those who wait, and leaves their frosting for last? The well-rounded eater who eats the frosting as you go? Or do you not eat the frosting at all, leaving it on your plate or kindly giving it away to some sugar fiend? Choose your eating style and explain why you eat the way you do in the comments section below.

Ben & Jerry’s has released a new ice cream flavor in partnership with Late Night host Jimmy Fallon with the name “Late Night Snack.” The flavor is Vanilla Bean Ice Cream with a Salty Caramel Swirl & Fudge Covered Potato Chip Clusters.

I received an invite this morning to an event with Jimmy Fallon and Ben & Jerry at 30 Rockefeller tomorrow night for a special announcement – now the people in attendance made clear a new flavor was going to be announced, but before I even had a chance to find a So Good correspondent in NYC to attend, I discovered the ice cream has already been appearing in stores! Whoops, that kind of kills the surprise announcement huh?

Checkout the review from someone who has actually tasted the ice cream, Rodzilla Reviews which also draws a mention on Mediaite.

Does this flavor sound intriguing to you? I LOVE salty and sweet together, so when chocolate covered pretzels or peanuts appear in the form of an ice cream filling or a Take 5 bar, I’m all about it. Will be curious to see how the crunchy potato chips hold up in the ice cream after receiving a protective layer of fudge coating. Also lets see how salty vs. caramel-ish this “Salty Caramel Swirl” is.

Yesterday, the Oreo Facebook page had a fun idea: set the Guinness World Record for most “Likes” on a single Facebook post. With more than 16 million likes on Facebook, and as the third most popular food Facebook page (as of a few months ago), Oreo seemed to have a perfectly good chance at setting the record, assuming of course, its fans are engaged and pay attention to Oreo status updates in their news feed. Oreo even started prepping its fans for this occasion last week, with several status updates asking its fans to participate starting at 9 am on Tuesday morning. The next morning, the verdict is in: Oreo failed. Big time. Why? Thanks to this guy:

The writing was on the wall pretty quickly for Oreo. As failblog reported around 12:30 pm yesterday, Lil Wayne decided to hop on the bandwagon of setting a Guinness World Record. Although he has 20 million likes on Facebook, that didn’t appear to be the deciding factor. Unlike Oreo fans, his actually seemed down for the cause. Six hours into the challenge, the Oreo post had 61,000 likes. Lil Wayne? Just one hour after his post, he had a stunning 305,000. Meaning in 1/6th the time, he garnered 5 times as many likes as Oreo. I’m no math major but….you get the idea. Domination.

But of course the day wasn’t over at 12:30 pm – perhaps Oreo could muster a comeback? Not even close. At 1:30 am last night, Oreo stood at 111,000 likes. Lil Wayne? 453,000. The beat down continued. As we awoke this morning to see the final tally (at least for Oreo, Lil Wayne still has about 6 hours to go as of this posting), here is where the race stood:

Just over 114,000 is the final tally for Oreo. For Lil Wayne, 490,000 with another 5-6 hours to go.

In its posts leading up to Tuesday, Oreo set a target of more than 50,000 likes for its Tuesday morning post, which, the brand believed, would set the record for most likes in a 24 hour period. Um, sure, I guess. Just 4 days ago, Lil Wayne simply posted “I like you” from his iPhone, and garnered 75,000 likes. Now granted they weren’t all in the first 24 hours, but Oreo’s previous status update, touting Oreo Valentine’s Day e-cards garnered….wait for it…..wait for it….977 likes.

Ouch. Oreo, you never stood a chance. You got owned. Lil Wayne style.
