Anyone who follows the world of food or lives in a city struck by the food truck craze (see: DC, LA, Portland, Austin, NYC and many, many others) knows that several years ago the food truck business started blowing up, and is still going strong. But now there is a new contender in the “mobile” vending world: a food boat.

Yes, the Burger Buoy is serving up breakfast, hot dogs, burgers and sandwiches from a converted houseboat, such as their signature Buoy Burger, a six-ounce burger on a Kaiser roll with bacon, cheese, coleslaw and cucumbers. The idea was born out of the frustration boaters often have with how long it can take them to return to shore, dock their boat and wait in line at what is usually a single shop in the harbor. They have a website, as well as a Facebook page that could use some love. The owner of Burger Buoy explains the concept:

“Boaters can call in an order over the phone or radio or even text it and can either pick up or have their order delivered.”

While they probably have to pay for a dock slip, much like food trucks they don’t have to pay either rent or property tax. Offering a potential low-overhead business after paying to renovate the boat. The boat is operating in the harbor of Freeport, NY and looks like this:

Cool. So what’s next? A food plane? Unicycle delivery riders? A swim-up food submarine that surfaces in the middle of popular beaches? Food parachuters who drop down on you while at the park?

When it comes to making a sandwich, as I have long said, condiments are the lubrication that keep the engine of a sandwich running. Â Without them, what do you have? Â It might as well be tumbleweed.

As a result, I have sampled many forms of sandwich spreads, from spicy horseradish mayo to red pepper hummus and many things in between. Â I am generous with my additions, and as a result, there is often much cleanup to be done (post-sandwich, of course).

Therefore, when I saw the invention below, my jaw hit the table. Â It is truly for the sandwich king that has everything.

Developed by Japanese company Furukawa Kiko, the device called SWITL can take blobs of “semi-liquids” right off the counter, seemingly untouched, and can even put them right back (or onto a sandwich).  I’m not sure what the practical application is here, but it is really cool, and if you can’t wow them with your sandwich, you might just have to wow them with the clean up.

H/t to Fast Company’s twitter feed for the scoop. And for more on sandwiches, the So Good archives is packed.

A little over a month ago I started a new job as Brand Strategist for Sweetgreen, a DC-based salad and frozen yogurt chain that is leading the national charge in sourcing delicious local and organic ingredients, with an underlying commitment to the environment and its community.

Here at So Good we write about all sorts of different restaurants and food chains – from fast food to sit-down fare to home cooking or more casual fare. Since we keep a special eye out for interesting marketing campaigns, we find ourselves writing with some frequency about big fast food chains – after all, they often have the most money to throw around and their food quality doesn’t usually speak for itself. These chains need to spend large amounts of money to entice consumers to give outrageous new products a try.

After years of writing all too often about fast food chains and products, I couldn’t be more excited to be leading the charge on the brand strategy for a company that stands for all the right things. It’s a great feeling to work for a company whose mission and values you completely believe in. Sweetgreen sources ingredients from local farmers and creates products that are healthy & fresh, but also delicious. Its silverware and packaging is 100% compostable and the company has a strong commitment to the environment and sustainability. Founded in 2007 by 3 Georgetown graduates, it now features 7 stores in the greater DC area, two in Philadelphia, and continues to build a loyal customer following.

Part of sweetgreen’s mission is to encourage people to live what we call “the Sweetlife” – a balanced lifestyle focused on eating well, living well and being a part of our community. For many of us at sweetgreen, part of the Sweetlife is also about enjoying good music. So this year, we’re throwing the second annual Sweetlife Festival – a festival based on our eco-friendly business practices, commitment to a balanced lifestyle, community partnerships, and appreciation for a delicious yet sustainable meal. The lineup is nothing short of stellar – The Strokes, Girl Talk, Lupe Fiasco, Crystal Castles, Cold War Kids and many others. The festival is taking place May 1st at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. If you haven’t bought your ticket yet, do so NOW, the show is getting ever closer to being completely sold out.

If you live in DC, Philadelphia or elsewhere and enjoy sweetgreen’s food, or support sweetgreen’s business practices and values, do So Good a favor and like sweetgreen on Facebook or follow sweetgreen on Twitter.

Wondering what to get for that foodie in your life for Christmas? Well, I found something pretty cool. If the person in question is an iPhone-lover like me, then the iGrill might hit the spot. The intersection of food and technology, this product transforms your iPhone into a roving meat thermometer. All you do is insert a probe into the meat you are cooking, and then monitor the temperature from your phone anywhere within 200 feet. It also has alerts for specific temps and a kitchen timer.

If you have friends over, it can be a pain in the neck to have to keep going out to the grill (especially in the cold) to keep checking to see if your chicken, steaks, etc. are ready. It is pricey at $100, but just seems to be a really useful product. (Heck, it might even be a good gift for your favorite So Good writer… hmm, was that too obvious??)

H/t to Engadget for the tip.

As many of you may know, Prop 19, which is on the ballot this year in California, would legalize marijuana in the state. Polls have shown the ballot measure with a very small, but consistent, lead. So Good’s views on the absurdity of marijuana still being illegal are well-documented, so there is no soapbox rant here.

Instead, I want to note the food connections to the potential legalization of marijuana. Many people enjoy the mental release and relaxation that marijuana provides, but don’t enjoy smoking or want to avoid the negative health effects of inhaling smoke. Many of these individuals turn to “edibles”, various types of food with marijuana/THC as part of the recipe. The latest marijuana-infused food to hit the market? Ice cream:
