Bud Light Lime Limearita, StrawberRita, RazberRita, and MangoRita Review: The Awesome, The Not-So Bad, and The Horrible

Let’s be honest. The commercials for Bud Light Lime LimeaRita and its fruity Rita friends (no pun intended) make it seem like they are the ideal drinks for summer. The quick fix margarita. The marg on-the-go. Serve over ice or blend it all in a blender and you’ve got an easy, refreshing drink on a squelching day. But do they live up to that hype? Does the Bud Light Lime flavor help make the margarita taste great or gross? 

We’ve all seen those huge margaritas that come in a Shaq-sized glass with a Corona beer upside down in them. Depending on the restaurant or recipe, this drink is called all sorts of different names: Corona Margarita, Bulldog Margarita, Beerita, Coronita, Margarona; the list goes on. They’re an easy way to get drunk and they taste wonderful. I think this is what Budweiser was trying to accomplish with the Bud Light Lime LimeaRita and other variations. Although they soared on the RazberRita and the MangoRita, they completely tripped and fell down five flights of stairs when it comes to the traditional LimeaRite and StrawberRita.

I decided to try the Bud Light Lime, LimeaRita first since it was the classic. It’s supposed to be light and crisp with perfect hints of lime and alcohol. I love margaritas so I was hoping this would be my favorite.

This was by leaps and bounds the WORST margarita I’ve ever had. It’s not even just the worst one out of the bunch; I wish I never drank it. I cracked it open and the first whiff of the drink reeked of cleaning products. It didn’t smell like alcohol; it smelled like old pledge and pool chemicals. Not appetizing.

After the first sip, it was so extremely sour that I did that shake-your-head, purse-your-lips, squish-your-whole-face, cough dance that we all do when we eat something with sourness that truly disturbs us. I took a few more sips but it was just too much tartness to handle. And my inner-kid is the one who stuffs a whole bunch of Sour Patch Kids in my mouth and sucks the sour off until I have that burn on my tongue (Sour Patch Addicts will understand). It’s not the good type of sour like the Sour Patch Kids. It’s just like you ate a sour grape where the juice squirts down your throat and you want to spit it out.

It doesn’t taste anything like a real margarita let alone a beerita. It doesn’t matter if you ice it or blend it, it just is unappealing on all fronts. Actually, just trash it. If you took salt, Seltzer water, and Mr. Clean, you could make the same drink. Too salty, too tart, and too much 409. I would not recommend buying the Bud Light Lime, LimeaRita for yourself or your party this summer.

Where the LimeaRita toppled the sour scales, the StrawberRita fell over the bridge into sweet waters. This drink had some of the same unappealing characteristics as the first, bad smell, too much alcohol, and overall poor flavoring, but the amount of sugar backlash takes the cake. Extremely sugary soda plus alcohol is essentially what this drink is. It in no way tastes like a strawberry margarita or a daiquiri or a Coronita. The point of having these types of drinks is to enjoy all the wonderful flavors without having to taste all the alcohol behind it. The Bud Light Lime, StrawberRita is exactly the opposite. Even if you’re just looking to get drunk this summer, I wouldn’t suggest purchasing this drink. It’ll give you a stomachache before you even feel the buzz.

Hooray! They finally got it right! Thankfully, Budweiser came out with two new varieties of Rita drinks including the RazberRita and the MangoRita. The RazberRita fairs on the sweet side like the StrawberRita but it’s not even close to as sugary-tasting. This drink tastes like you took a sour raspberry hard candy and mixed it with soda water and alcohol to make a perfectly light and refreshing margarita. It doesn’t exactly taste like most raspberry-flavored drinks or candies but it’s still extremely good. No bad smell when you first open the can. No horrible pool chlorine and chemical stenches. No extreme alcohol flavor. Just refreshingly sweet margarita flavor for summer. This is a great drink to choose for hanging out with friends on the beach or at the pool if you have a bag of ice handy.

I would definitely buy the Bud Light Lime, MangoRita for any occasion. This was THE BEST drink out of the three and it was extremely well flavored without all the sugar and alcohol over exaggerations. On first crack of the can’s lid, the smell was perfectly hinted with mango and sweetness. I wanted to take a vacation to the tropics right then just so I could enjoy this drink on the beach. Refreshing, light, doesn’t taste anything like alcohol, and any way you serve it, you’ll love it. For those drinkers who love fruity yet non-alcoholic-tasting alcoholic drinks, this is for you. Tropical and perfectly carbonated mango drink for summer. It doesn’t make you feel like you just drank a whole fifth of Gatorade and it doesn’t activate your gag reflex. I’m going to make the Bud Light Lime, MangoRita one of my new drinks for summer. Budweiser should consider advertising the MangoRita and RazberRita more than the LimeaRita and StrawberRita. They’ll see sales skyrocket.

Cruising the aisles of the grocery store looking for a summer drink beyond beer should be simple. Along with Twisted Tea, you should definitely consider picking up a 12-pack of Bud Light Lime RazberRita or MangoRita for $10.99, or pick up singles for just $1, and leave the Lime-a-Rita and StrawberRita at the register. You want to enjoy your summer with light and bright drinks. Not ones that you think may have been dropped in the pool or had the entire bag of sugar dumped into them.
