(www.trippyfood.com) Red Velvet desserts have been tremendously popular for a few years now. Ranging from traditional cupcakes to lip gloss, this trend has taken over popular food, beauty, and various other items. Dunkin Donuts recently revealed a seasonal donut, the Red Velvet Drizzle, which was supposed to taste like the donut-version of the cake. While the drizzle was fairly accurate to cream cheese frosting, the donut tasted more like chapstick than the dessert. (nosaby2.blogspot.com) When I saw the tantalizing treats at the counter, they looked professional, not sloppy like many Dunkin Donuts. The drizzle was delicately draped over the donut. The cake was that perfect maroon color with a shiny, inviting coat. My mouth was watering while I tried to get out my order. I noticed a few people in front of me also ordered the donut and the Red Velvet coffee; definitely an extremely popular pair of items. I saw down to chow down on what I thought would be an amazingly awesome Red Velvet Drizzle treat. The first bite was ok but didn’t live up to my expectations. I thought I was just being too picky so I continued eating it. The drizzle was your typical cream cheese sugar concoction and by itself, it was delicious. The actual donut though had a weird aftertaste. It was waxy and tasted like plastic; hardly reminiscent of the cupcakes and cakes I’ve enjoyed. I’ve used the red velvet chapstick before and of course, like any time you use chapstick, some gets into your mouth. This donut tasted exactly the same. Red Velvet Drizzle Donut (sunnyyq.wordpress.com) I thought it would be fluffier on the inside but it was denser. I thought it would be a little more sugary, but it lacked that. My original impressions were thrown out the window with the disappointing donut. I wanted to like it, I love red velvet treats, but it was too crayon-tasting and not enough donut or dessert. (hungrytommy.com) Maybe it would have tasted better dunked into the Red Velvet coffee to help it soak up more of the flavor (for other coffee-friendly snacks, check out this article). The Red Velvet Drizzle donut essentially lacked the red velvet flavor. I wouldn’t say it was that much different than a regular donut. You could tell that they definitely tried to inspire the donut with red velvet yet it failed. Sometimes the sugary drizzle can help with flavor and lack of sugar, but the two together just didn’t mix. The frosting was a hit and the donut, unfortunately, a miss. (www.pinterest.com) They won’t be serving the donut until next fall; hopefully next year they’ll use a new recipe. At times it can be difficult to convert a cake recipe into a donut recipe, but you’d think a chain as popular as Dunkin Donuts would be a master at it. I mean they’ve made the Gingerbread donut, which was delicious, among other great adaptations. I’d say keep the drizzle, but try again on the donut.
