Fancy Schmancy Ice Cream Sandwiches

Shortly before the dawn of the 20th century, on the bustling streets of New York City, while it had become relatively easy to find ice-cream via curb side carts, the end user experience remained lacking due to barbaric delivery systems.

Customers could purchase “Penny Licks”. Small reusable glass bowls, which in most cases were eagerly licked clean by the consumer, then handed back to the vendor, who swirled them around in a pail of tepid water so they could be used over and over again.

Soon after, the “Hokey Pokey” sauntered onto the scene.  A small square slab of ice-cream was tucked into a piece of paper, making the treat mobile, albeit no frills and devoid of any fun factor.

It wasn’t until late 1899, early 1900 in the Bowery district that history notes the emergence of a game changer. That being push carts handing out portable ice-cream with edible wafer bookends for a penny per sandwich.  America’s love for the travel friendly treat continues over a century later.
