Review: Takis 2013!

Hey there, So Good Readers! It’s 2013, and your friendly neighborhood Junk Food Guy spent the New Year in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!  And you know they had lots of great junk food down there, so let’s get right to it.  Today I am reviewing Takis 2013!

Takis are pretty simple – they are rolled tortilla chip snacks by a company called Barcel.  This rolled-taco-like snack has been around for a while, and usually come in various flavors, like Fuego (Hot Chili Pepper & Lemon), Salsa Brava (Hot Sauce), Takis Nitro (Habanero & Lime) and Crunchy Fajita (Taco Flavored).  These are very popular in Mexico, and have been copied in the US too! (I’m looking at you, Doritos Dinamita!)

When I saw Takis released a 2013 flavor, I knew I had to try it.  Xtra Hot? Giddyup!

I guess Takis feel like 2013 is FINALLY the future, spelling the word extra “XTRA” and using futuristic font that I haven’t seen since perusing X-men comic books a decade ago.  Still, there’s only so much mocking I can do when holding a bag of rolled fried corn snacks.

Despite not knowing a lick of Spanish, I can see clearly that these chips have PLENTY of good things like fat and sodium.  I thought 2013 would be the year of healthy Takis snacks, Barcel!  Crap.

I opened up this bag of Takis, and was immediately stunned by the color of the rolled corn snacks.  SO RED!  SO VERY RED.  As you can see, there was PLENTY of powder to go around.  Wow.  Now I was scared.  These were XTRA HOT and covered in red dust…would these light my mouth on fire?

I crunched a bunch, and verdict: VERY VERY TASTY.  But not the flavor I expected.  Over on my blog, I had tried something similar to this: Doritos Dinamita Chile Limon Chips. And I hated them. HATED THEM.  Reason: too much artificial lime taste!

These, however, tasted like the proper version of what those chips were trying to be.  With the first crunch, my mouth was filled with a tangy and almost-tomatoey taste.  Sort of like a good salsa.  These rolls were crunchy, and as the chili/tomato taste faded, the burn kicked in, growing slowly as I chewed.  These weren’t, in my opinion, SUPER or even XTRA hot, but they were spicy for sure.  The lime flavor was really muted, and basically gave the chili flavor enough sour and tang to really like the savory edge of it sing.  Good crunch, and plenty of flavor.

I REALLY liked these, but not because the flavor was something unexpected.  Rather, it was finally a flavor done RIGHT.  Out of all the chili lime, chili limon, and other similar snacks, these may have been the most successful of the bunch.  Nice work, Takis. Happy New Year!
