Happy Monday, So Good readers! Just your friendly neighborhood Junk Food Guy here.  Turkey Day is just a few days away, but that doesn’t mean that post-Thanksgiving holiday items aren’t in full swing. After Pringles announced a while back that they’d be releasing White Chocolate Peppermint Pringles for the holidays, I have been searching high and low for these suckers. Um, Pringles that taste like candy canes? I HAVE to taste this abomination. So I searched grocery stores. Gas stations. Walmarts. Targets.  And nothing!  NOTHING!!!!! The timing of Superstorm Sandy didn’t help, as the panicky people in my region cleared the shelves of every bottle of water, loaf of bread, and container of junk food at the time of the announcement. “Hey, the power’s gonna be out…that means I’m allowed to eat four bags of Doritos, I think.”

Undaunted, I headed even farther out of town this weekend to look for this elusive item. And then, at a Target far, far away, I spotted them:

Limited Edition White Chocolate Peppermint Pringles! In all their glory…and by that I mean hastily stacked on the top shelf of a random aisle where wrapping paper and gingerbread house kits were being sold.  Thanks for making it easy, Target.

So let’s review these bad boys!

The whole can of these Limited Edition White Chocolate Peppermint Pringles is designed to look sort of like …what, a stocking? A chimney? There’s some snowy ridge at one point with candy canes sticking out? Peppermint psychedelic tower of fun? Why do I feel like I’m on a boat with Willy Wonka headed down a tunnel?

This is how Kellogg’s describes these Limited Edition White Chocolate Peppermint Pringles, according to the press release, “The classic holiday blend of cool peppermint and smooth white chocolate flavors delivers unique crisp combination.” I’m pretty sure there’s something grammatically wrong there.  Still, you can’t blame Kellogg’s for not wanting to miss out on the holiday buzz.  What have they done in year’s past – had Pringles with food coloring snowflakes and reindeer on them, or maybe had them tinted red or green?  BOOOORING.

At 10 calories a chip, these Limited Edition White Chocolate Peppermint Pringles must not have any real chocolate on them…which means we’re talking chocolate-like edible chemicals? Let’s check…

I see milk fat, sweet cream solids, cocoa powder, and sucralose. Oh, and natural AND artificial flavors.  Can someone get me an EMT on standby?

Limited Edition White Chocolate Peppermint Pringles didn’t have one speck of visible flavoring on them.  No chocolate dust, no sugar flakes, NOTHING.  Now I’m starting to get COMPLETELY freaked out.  Did the can smell like  something sweet? When i stuck my nose RIGHT in the can and inhaled deeply…there was a hint of cocoa.  Time to chew!

…..

Ok….ok.   So….hmmm.  Wow.  Wait, what?  …let me gather myself, and try to describe these Limited Edition White Chocolate Peppermint Pringles.

The first thing I did was lick the chip. I tasted…chocolate, mint, and salt.  I looked at the chip again…no visible powders. I licked again…a salty chocolate mint flavor.  WTH.

As I placed the chip in my mouth and closed my chompers, the air around the chip began to taste of chocolate mint. Then, as I chewed, the decently strong flavor of a rich cocoa and icy feel of mint emerged…only then to be blended with the predictable taste of a salty Pringles potato crisp.  It was the most peculiar thing I’d eaten of late.  So bizarre.

The sweet flavor lasts only a couple seconds before fading into the chip flavor, and the resultant taste gives the potato crisp a strange nuttiness that Pringles don’t usually have.  Plus, the mint flavored lingered.  My mind was blown…what the heck was I eating!?  It really did feel like there wasn’t a calculated taste Kellogg’s was aiming for, like a sea salt caramel, or what not…this was just chocolate mint flavor on top of a salty potato chip. BAM.

Would I eat these again? I really don’t think so. But these are bizarre enough that if you bring these to your holiday party, it WILL BE what EVERYONE is talking about by party’s end, WITHOUT A DOUBT.

I’m not sure if I’m going to try these. I had the pumpkin pie Pringles, and they were just alright. Not to much flavor.
